Yet another avoidable massacre
Vox makes some good points:
I have never understood why so many otherwise intelligent individuals have such a difficult time understanding the fact that, by definition, criminals pay no attention to the laws.
Ironically:
More than one year before today's unprecedented shooting rampage at Virginia Tech, the state's General Assembly quashed a bill that would have given qualified college students and employees the right to carry handguns on campus.
At the time, Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker said he was happy to hear of the bill's defeat, according to the Roanoke Times.
"I'm sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly's actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus," the Virginia Tech spokesman said.

Semi-automatic weapons
The "news" (NBC's idiotic "Today" show) has been reporting on the goings on at Virginia Tech today. In a 2-minute span, they used the phrase "semi-automatic weapons" (referring to the police-state--er, police presence) no fewer than 5 times. The emphasis used indicated a desire to magnify the power of the police presence by the fact they're carrying "semi-automatic weapons". Every handgun issued to police officers is a semi-automatic weapon, typically a Glock 9mm. All "semi-automatic" means is that one bullet is fired with each trigger pull, and that the next bullet is automatically loaded by use of the recoil energy. That's it. It's no big deal.
This is a not-so-subtle way of trying to instill fear of "semi-automatic weapons" into the populace so that they, too, may someday be made illegal by those who would rob the innocent of this means of defense.
