The value of a college education

It costs a lot to put your kid through college these days. Of course, you expect to get some value for your money, in the form of an educated young adult who can, you know, think and solve problems. Unfortunately, there is just no guarantee of that, as Rachel Lucas discovered recently:

Lab partner: “Well now we must make the solutions stronger to test higher concentration.”

Me: “We can’t make them stronger, they’re from stock solution.”

LP: “So we just add more!” » read more »

Double standard

I suppose we see so much of this sort of thing that we can be inured to it, but sometimes it sticks in my craw. Have a look at this video, and then ask yourself what would have been the response -- from the police and the media -- if it had been KKK members, rather than the Black Panthers, outside the polling place.

Certification vs. Degrees

The problem with Vox's apparent preference for certification is that such processes are just as bogus as any degree. I cannot begin to describe how many times I've seen UL, ISO, or TL certifications handed out like Tic Tacs...after the requisite bribes and rear-kissing. » read more »

English Only

Apparently, English-Only rules in the workplace, etc., are all but illegal. The EEOC's policies state that such rules are assumed to be in violation of federal law (discriminating based upon national origin), unless the employer can prove such a rule is necessary for safety's sake or otherwise necessary for conducting business. Such proof must include actual evidence of the harm of speaking foreign languages in that business' context. » read more »

The end of the airlines

I don't know what more I could add to this story about putting taser-like bracelets on all airline passengers. Frankly, I hope they do it. I hope it does end the airline industry. While we're at it, I hope I live long enough to see the total collapse of American stupidity. I would say I'd grieve the loss of America herself, but that happened a long time ago.

The Basics

In this editorial, Joseph Farah suggests a radical notion: pass a test in order to qualify to vote. Of course, this idea has already been discussed at tuscanycircle in this thread. In the editorial, Farah provides a link to an online quiz comprised of some of the "more difficult" questions from the U.S. citizenship test. » read more »

Comments on Vox Popoli

I usually appreciate Vox' blog entries. He's a reasonably smart dude, and that's refreshing. He's not the strongest theologian, so his worldview occasionally suffers (e.g., creationism), but I think he'd admit to that anyway. By and large, he's most often right. I plan to continue reading his blog more or less regularly. » read more »

Inoculated Against Christianity

To inoculate means to protect against, theoretically forevermore. There are many ways to inoculate others against Christianity, all but insuring they will never seek the Lord. Stupid Christians are the worst offenders here, doing countless unbelievers and the church a grave disservice. Here are some of the ways in which believers stupidly work to condemn others. » read more »
